MTN Nigeria is test running its 4G LTE network. Are you interested in getting in on the action? Here are the things you need to know and do to successfully subscribe to and use an MTN 4G data plan:
Visafone Line Required
You need a Visafone line that has been migrated to MTN. Regular MTN lines do not have access to the 4G LTE network yet. Your regular MTN line may accidentally stray in and out, but officially, it shouldn’t be able to connect to the 4G network yet.
A 4G Smartphone
Of course, you need a 4G smartphone that is compatible with the MTN Nigeria LTE network.
444 Is The Number For MTN 4G Data Plan
Make sure that you have enough airtime on your line for the data plan you want. Dial *444# to access the Visafone data menu. The process: Dial *444# – 3 – Select the data plan of your choice, and complete the process.
Important Point When Renewing
Each time I tried to renew the data plan or activate a different plan, I met with a data plan activation failure error. Nothing I did worked. Customer care agents could not help me either, until after several calls to 180, one agent who knew what was up attended to me.
Here’s the low down: if you have an active data plan (even if you have exhausted the data allocation), you have to opt out of (de-activate) it first. How to do that? Dial *444# – 3 – 8 – Select De-activate.
When you have de-activated the running plan, you can then activate the new plan. Do not ask me why we have to dance around in circles like that to subscribe to an MTN 4G data plan. It just works that way.
