==>> Recently airtel are unleashing new data plans every moment and one of the data plan they currently introduced is the airtel subscription of 1.5GB for just N1000 which is valid for only 30days. see how to subscribe for it here.

==>> Also airtel went head to introduce another astonishing data plan of 2gb for N200 and 6GB for just N500, but the downside if this plan is that it only works on 2G networks, which means you can't use it with 3G on your android smartphone, it fair because of the price and those java and symbian users will benefit more from this plan. see subscription codes here

==>> we also noticed that airtel BB10 subscription of 3GB for just N1000 works flawlessly on android MTK devices with the help of tweaking your device IMEI(Make sure you don't have any airtime or any other data on your sim after subscribing for this plan, else it wont work on your sim because many people have been complaining about this airtel bis not working for them(Make sure you did not Activate Airtel 2G Data Plan on that Sim else the BIS won't worm See more details here

==>> i don't know if you guys are also using the airtel trybe night plan? i don't want to discuss about this, but the night is just something we should consider because airtel have totally change it to 500MB for N25 and 1.5GB for N500 and the time is from 12AM-5AM, one good thing about this is that you can renew the Data same night. to activate you dial** *312# and choose type Night Plan to activate anyone of your choice.

Mtn also did what's in there power to be like Glo network but.............................The mtn network have been full of surprises lately and the worst part is that they zap data like when a newly born baby sucks the breast of his mother, this is the one reason why i don't use mtn.
anyway for those of you that still would love what mtn have in pack for you on their surprise .......... here is it.
==>> with mtn startpack you can get upto 11GB and although i have enjoyed this offer onces and it only meant for newly registered sim on the mtn network.see more details about this offer here

==>> How to Get upto 5GB with just N1000 on mtn Quick winD see more details here
==>> Also in may, mtn lunched an unbeatable plan which is called MTN NIGHT DATA PLAN, this particular plan works only in the night from 12am-4am, and the amount is very cheap to the extent we can call it a free browsing tweak instead. the price if just N25 and the data is capped @ 500MB or even more.See how to subscribe for mtn night plan here, and it did'nt just end here mtn also introduced another type of night plan which is from 9PM-6AM and it very cheap see more details here

==>> MTN did'nt just stop at the midnight plan oh, they went ahead and slashed their DATA PLAN to even more cheaper prices and went to the extent of introducing data plan as high as 22GB, 50GB and 80GB, and the price is not that much see more details about this here

  • ETISALAT

What have etisalat actually done for us this past few month? absoluteley NOTHING!!! and it really getting on my nerves, how will a network just stay like that when others are busy bringing customers to themselves the only thing i could lay record about Etisalat is the fact that they recently brought new social me 1 day plan which i know many people are not using again because of one problem of the other, but if you still need to learn how this social me works see details here.
since etisalat have failed to be renewing the 4GB we did in april and that have kept many in the dark.
==>> Also MTN did not only slash thier data plans to cheaper price, Etisalat also did same thing and it also similar to the one of MTN see more details here.

less I forget, i did not include the Normal Etisalat social me and chat pack tweak as i always do on this post, the reason is because Etisalat social me and chat pack is now data capped, and the

information reaching us states that the monthly sub is capped at 700MB while the weekly sub is capped at just 300MB, this came as a shock to everyone and really made us to stop using the social me tweak.

so this is all i could map out from etisalat this JUNE, see more post about Etisalat data plans and free browsing tweak HERE

GLO

==>> Glo was able to join other networks in releasing new data plans too, and i think the glo users out there should know about it. see more details here

==>> Glo BIS plan have not changed yet and it still rocks on both android devices see more details here

==>> lastly, Glo also introduced their own weekend plan in another style..see more details here

new leak reveals exciting Galaxy S8 details

Tech fans around the world are abuzz as the rumors ramp up ahead of Apple’s big iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus event next week. We already know practically everything we should expect from Apple next week. The company’s new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will look a great deal like its old 6 and 6 Plus, but it’ll pack some big performance upgrades as well as a handful of new features. Both new models will have bigger batteries and twice the internal storage at each tier, and the larger iPhone 7 Plus will also sport a new dual-lens camera design.

But with Apple’s big iPhone 7 unveiling just around the corner, attention now turns briefly to Samsung because a new leak has seemingly revealed some exciting details about the company’s upcoming Galaxy S8.

It always seems like by some strange coincidence, Apple leaks tend to overshadow big announcements from rival companies. Just as an Android vendor is gearing up to unveil its next flagship phone, for example, some big report will spill new details on an unannounced Apple device and steal away some thunder.

We’re not sure this latest leak will end up stealing much thunder away from Apple’s iPhone 7 reveal next week, but this time around a potentially big Samsung leak has barged in on the Apple news cycle.

A post on Chinese microblogging site Weibo from a user named “i ice universe” (via PhoneArena) offers supposed specs for Samsung’s Galaxy S8 flagship phone. Samsung just unveiled the new Galaxy Note 7, of course, but the Galaxy S8 is expected in the first quarter next year so it’s obviously well along in terms of development.

So what can we expect from next year’s Galaxy S8? According to this leak, next year’s flagship Samsung phone will feature a new dual-lens rear camera setup with one 12-megapixel module and one 13-megapixel module. The addition of a dual-lens camera on the Galaxy S8 next year wouldn’t exactly be a surprise, of course, since Apple is introducing a dual-lens camera on the iPhone 7 Plus this year.

The post also claims that the Galaxy S8 will feature a new and improved 8-megapixel front-facing camera, and it will also sport an iris sensor just like the Galaxy Note 7. Both features would be appreciated, though neither would be surprising. What we’re most interested in seeing is the new Galaxy S8’s design. Samsung completely changed the design identity of its flagship smartphones beginning with the Galaxy S6, but every subsequent high-end handset has been a slight variation on that same design. Where will Samsung go from here? We can’t wait to find out.

Facebook is deploying ExpressWiFi Hotspots around Lagos in conjunction with Coollink

In recent times, Facebook has doubled down on its mission of connecting the world via internet, with initiatives like Facebook lite and Free Basics, making such connectivity much easier to access in the developing world generally and Nigeria specifically. With regards to Nigeria, Facebook is going a step further with the deployment of ExpressWifi in Lagos in collaboration with Coollink. The service is expected to launch at some point this week, but is already in operation in some parts of Lagos, such as Ikota Shopping Complex.

ExpressWifi by Facebook is a new program that lets phone owners purchase data from local internet service providers. Effectively, Facebook is providing software that helps local ISPs and entrepreneurs sell and provide internet service in rural areas, which can be accessed via public Wi-Fi hotspots. Besides being a source of cheap internet, the program is also designed as a means of empowering entrepreneurs who get the Wifi equipment (including a 1Kva inverter) setup for free and make a 15% commission on each ExpressWifi data plan sale.

Users within Express Wifi coverage are able to browse the sites on Free basics for free, but additional browsing activity is charged. Internet plans on ExpressWifi start at N40 for 100MB daily and go all the way up to N1,600 for a 5GB monthly plan. Each ExpressWifi point is served by a 10Mbps connection which is shared across all the users. Not at all shabby.

Word on the street is that the service, will be deployed across the country eventually, as soon as the first phase which is centred around Lagos is completed.

Nigeria will be the second location where ExpressWifi by Facebook is being deployed, following the deployment in India last month.

Here’s a table of all the data plans currently available on the ExpressWifi by Facebook service and their costs.

Databundle Cost Validity
100MB N40 24hrs
300MB N110 24hrs
750MB N270 7 days
2GB N700 7 days
3GB N1000 30 days
5GB N1600 30 days

You can sign up for a 14 day free trial if you’re within a coverage area Here

What is LTE Advanced, and why should you care that Verizon is rolling it out?

Earlier today, Verizon announced that it’s rolling out LTE Advanced to customers from coast to coast, at no additional cost to Verizon’s traditional arm and leg. But in case you’re tired of the carrier/uncarrier announcements about the Fastest Internet Evarr, here’s what it all really means.

What is LTE Advanced?
In short, a fancy name for using new technology to make existing LTE (4G) wireless connections faster. LTE Advanced can refer to all sorts of improvements to LTE, and the only real common factor is that they’re all backwards-compatible with other LTE technology. In this case, it refers to combining multiple channels to send mobile data as quickly as possible. Verizon is claiming a 50 percent faster peak speed for its technology.

How does it work?
Verizon’s technology is called “carrier aggregation,” and it really isn’t that hard to understand. Verizon owns multiple bands of spectrum, and normally, your device just uses the strongest signal. Using carrier aggregation, Verizon sends and receives packets on two or three channels at once, increasing the peak speed you can get under optimal conditions. Verizon has been trialling the technology for over a year.

How fast is it?
Very. Verizon claims that under optimal conditions, two-channel aggregation will hit speeds of 225Mbps, and three-channel aggregation over 300Mbps. That’s significantly faster than most home broadband, and faster than you will ever possibly need on a smartphone. It reality, it’s the difference between downloading an app in 20 seconds or 35.

Really, LTE Advanced is futureproofing — you won’t notice much of a difference right now, but when we’re all livestreaming 8K VR video during the next Olympics, Verizon will (probably) have the fastest, most mature network to do so.

Can I use LTE Advanced?
Maybe! Right now, there’s a list of 39 compatible Verizon devices, including the iPhone 6s, the Galaxy S7, LG G5 and Moto Z Droid. Basically, if you bought a good smartphone within the last year or two, it’s worth checking.

Otherwise, you just need to be a Verizon user. There’s no extra fees to pay or software to upgrade. In theory, the speed improvements should already be up and running.

What about other networks?
Sprint is also working on carrier aggregation. It sent out a conveniently timed press release today about a successful trial of what it’s calling “Sprint LTE Plus” at Soldier Field in Chicago. It’s the same basic technology, and in tests conducted by Sprint and Samsung, speeds of 230 Mbps were achieved. Carrier aggregation is live at 500 cell sites across Chicago for Sprint customers.

Other networks are following closely, and you can expect carrier aggregation to roll out wherever possible within a year or two.

We have some bad news about this year’s new Nexus phones

Google Nexus 2016 Price Sailfish Marlin

Google’s 2016 Nexus smartphones are codenamed Marlin and Sailfish. According to most leaks thus far, both handsets are expected to be premium devices when it comes to build quality as well as internal components and performance. With that in mind, don’t be surprised to hear that the phones will reportedly be more expensive than their predecessors, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X.

The smaller of the two, the Sailfish, is expected to cost $449 for the 32GB model — at least according to Nexus Blog’s unnamed sources from HTC. That’s $70 more than last year’s 16GB Nexus 5X, and $20 more than the 32GB option. It’s unclear at this time whether there will be a 64GB or 128GB Sailfish model, or how much the extra storage would cost.

The 32GB Nexus Marlin is reportedly priced at $599, which is $100 more than last year’s 32GB Nexus 6P. The 2015 Nexus phablet also came in 64GB and 128GB options, priced at $549 and $649, respectively. It’s likely that Google will also have Marlin versions with more built-in storage, but Nexus Blog doesn’t know what to expect.

Comparatively, the Nexus phones’ main rival is expected to have 32GB, 128GB and 254GB options – that’s the iPhone 7, launching in mid-September. While Apple is yet to announce the new iPhones, multiple independent reports indicated that these new storage upgrades are in the cards for the iPhone.
Google is rumored to have plans to announce the new Nexus devices at some point in September, and then the company will reportedly release them in early October.

From the iPhone 7 to the Apple Watch 2, here’s everything we expect Apple to announce next week

Earlier today, Apple sent out official invitations for a special event set to take place on September 7 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California. While Apple’s iPhone 7 will undoubtedly be the primary focus of the event, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see Apple take the opportunity to announce some other new products as well.

To help get you up to speed regarding what Apple likely has in store for us come September 7, we’ve put together a short but sweet summary highlighting all of the potential new products Apple may introduce to the world next week.

This one is a no-brainer. Every September, the collective eyes of the tech world all hone in on Apple’s September media event to take a look at what type of new features the company’s next-gen iPhone brings to the table. With the iPhone 7, word is that we won’t see any groundbreaking new features, but that’s not to say that the iPhone 7 will be a ho-hum upgrade.

Of course, it goes without saying that the iPhone 7 won’t ship with a 3.5mm headphone jack. In turn, it will be interesting to see how Apple plans to handle audio for the device. While lightning-based audio will obviously be an option, some have speculated that Apple may ship wireless earbuds with each new iPhone 7 sold. We consider this unlikely but Apple certainly isn’t afraid of abandoning what it deems to be legacy technologies in favor of more advanced alternatives. To that end, we have seen reports that Apple has been working on advanced Bluetooth earbuds with custom radio chips designed for best-in-class battery life.

Headphone speculation aside, the iPhone 7 has a few other features worth mentioning. Aside from faster internals, it’s believed that advanced camera technology will be the key selling point of both the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 7 models. The iPhone 7 Plus in particular will reportedly be graced with a dual-camera system that should provide superior camera performance all across the board, including improved performance in low-light settings, improved color fidelity and much more. As for the 4.7-inch iPhone, it will likely boast a more advanced camera sensor along with an optical image stabilization feature that was previously only available on the iPhone 6s Plus.
One other tidbit worth noting is a rumor that the iPhone 7’s home button will be flush with the device and will not be a mechanical button as we’ve seen in years past. To that end, rumor has it that the iPhone 7 home button may utilize a series of sensors that will vibrate when pressed, thereby creating an illusion that the button can be depressed.

Other iPhone 7 rumors we’ve seen claim that the entry-level model will have 32GB of storage. On a related note, some sketchy reports have suggested we might even see a 256GB storage option on the iPhone 7.
Additionally, we’ve seen conflicting reports pointing to the addition of either a Blue or Space Black model to the iPhone 7 lineup.

Apple Watch 2
It’s been nearly 18 months since Apple rolled out the original Apple Watch and we’re certainly due for an upgrade, especially with the impending rollout of WatchOS 3. With the Apple Watch 2, which Apple will presumably want to roll out ahead of the holiday shopping season, we can expect to see faster internals, improved battery life and the addition of GPS functionality. Taken together, Apple’s next-gen Apple Watch may finally become the breakout hit that many initially anticipated the original would be.

MacBook Pro
Apple’s notebook line has been somewhat stagnant in recent months, but that may be about to change with the company’s next-gen MacBook Pro. We’ve seen conflicting rumors as to whether or not Apple plans to release a new MacBook Pro next week, but given what we’ve heard so far, we’re definitely going to keep our fingers crossed. Per the rumor mill, Apple’s next-gen MacBook Pro will feature an OLED touch panel and Touch ID functionality. Specifically, the OLED touch panel is said to replace the function key row and will feature options that will dynamically change depending on whatever app happens to be in use.

iOS 10/WatchOS 3 overview
Lastly, we can expect Apple to briefly provide us with an overview of iOS 10 and WatchOS 3. That said, it’ll be interesting to see if Apple announces any new updates to the software that it didn’t want to divulge at WWDC this past June.

You could earn money while playing Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go might have peaked in terms of daily active users, but if you want proof that the game is still a massive hit, look no further than this job listing for a part-time “lure manager” that one redditor found on Facebook this week.

According to the ad, this company is looking to hire a Pokemon Go “expert” who has reached at least level 10 in the game. The applicant needs to use an Android phone, understand how to make in-app purchases in the Pokemon Go app, and, oddly, needs to have a college degree in order to get the job.

You can see the full ad in all its glory below:
Credit: Reddit / xiaolong_pao

We have no way of verifying whether or not this ad is real, but considering the fact that dozens of Pokemon Go players have already started making money off the app by driving players around at 10 miles per hour, it’s not all that outlandish that a company would want to have someone drop lures at regular intervals.

Unfortunately, the position appears to be based in the Philippines, so any American trainers desperate to transfer their Pokemon catching skills to a paid position are going to have to keep searching. I hear that Target is enjoying the fallout of Pokemon Go’s success — maybe they’ll need a lure manager soon?

REVIEW: night data plan codes for mtn, glo, airtel, and etisalat in nigeria

as we all know that almost all networks in Nigeria have unleashed their various night plan data and codes and it has been helping lot of us, especially the heavy files Downloader in the house, and i would like to use this opportunity to compile the various night plan from all networks in nigeria so you wont have to looking or searching for them one after the other.

MTN NIGHT PLAN BUNDLE DATA.

Firstly MTN were the first network in nigeria to introduce this night plan of a thing and it really helped us in the internet industry.

the mtn night plan costs N25 for one night and a data bundle of 500MB will allocated to you and can only be used at night from 12AM-4M, kindly note the data cant be renewed same night, which means that after exhausting your 500MB, you have to wait till the next day to do it again.

HOW CAN I SUBSCRIBE FOR IT.

simply go to your text message and send the keyword NIGHT to 131 and your are done.

AIRTEL NIGHT PLAN BUNDLE DATA.

After mtn released, their night plan airtel also joined the cue and they have the best night plan bundle so far because of the advantage they added to it.
airtel night plan comes in two data which is 500MB for N25 and 1.5GB for N50 only and one good thing about this night is that it can be renewed same night, which means after exhausting your allocated bundle, you can redo it again same night and continue flexing it, the time is from 12AM to 5AM.

dial *312#, Migrate to mtn TRYBE, then redial the code again and choose trybe night plan, then choose any bundle of our choice.

GLO NIGHT PLAN BUNDLE DATA.

For those who don’t know, glo offers weekend and night data plans . The night plan cost just N200 and offers 1GB.
The night plan offers 1GB data plan for N200 and if that’s not exhausted within the valid time frame on the first night, it can be used the following night. If not exhausted the following night, it can be used the other
following night. I guess that’s what makes the plan exceptional.
Although I haven’t experimented much with the weekend plan, based on my usage so far, it can be used for 2 weekends. That’s if the user does not exhaust the data
allocated the first weekend of course.

Bonus Tip: If using a blackberry 10 phone, remember to change the APN to gloflat or glosecure during the night or weekend period so you don’t keep getting
charged from your normal bis plan.

More details emerge about next year’s curved OLED iPhone

Apple’s ‘boring’ iPhone 7 will hit stores in less than a month, but there’s increased chatter online about the bold new iPhone update you’ve been craving. The iPhone due next year will mark Apple’s 10th iPhone anniversary – let’s call it iPhone 8 for the time being – and it should introduce a brand new form factor. Reports indicate that at least one new iPhone model next year will feature an OLED display, possibly a curved screen similar to what Samsung is doing with its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lines.

Now, a new report from Asia reveals more details about the upcoming redesigned iPhone.

According to ETNews, Apple has started to select partners that will develop the components needed to make the OLED iPhone. Aside from the flexible OLED screen that will be provided by Samsung, Apple is also in talks with companies that provide other parts required for such a display.

“We are currently pushing to supply our new products for OLED iPhone,” a person working at an unidentified supplier told the site. “It seems that a decision will be made during the fourth quarter.”

“We are looking to supply our materials to Apple, and it seems like we will receive a decision in September or October,” a second source from an OLED material industry said.

Apple is looking for suppliers of flexible printed circuit boards that will be needed for the handset, or FPCB. Apparently, businesses are fiercely competing for Apple’s orders. The display change also implies that Apple could ditch some current suppliers.

Interestingly, the tone of the article seems to indicate that all of Apple’s future iPhones will have OLED displays. ETNews says that Apple plans to eliminate “most” of its current suppliers. The report also says that the reason Apple is receiving increased attention for moving to OLED displays is that its business decisions have an enormous impact on suppliers’ bottom line. The paper notes that yearly iPhone sales reached 200 million, a number that’s equivalent to the total number of OLED smartphones that were sold all of last year.

One other interesting tidbit from the report concerns screen size. Apple is reportedly testing 4.8-inch and 5.5-inch OLED displays, but it’s unclear whether Apple will release more than one new iPhone model with an OLED screen. Previous reports indicated that Apple would launch three iPhones next year, with only one of them sporting an OLED screen.

The OLED iPhone is tipped to feature a dual edge design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and Note 7 models, but Apple is expected to differentiate its design by “changing curvature” and other features. A Bloomberg report from earlier this week said that the OLED iPhone 8 might also lack a physical home button, which we’ve now heard a number of times.

Apple reportedly plans to source major components for the iPhone 8 beginning in May 2017, with orders and mass-production to take place in the second quarter of the year.

All you need to know about Touch Disease, the latest big iPhone flaw

You might’ve heard about Touch Disease, the latest way for your iPhone to go poof. But what exactly is a Touch Disease, and how worried should you be about your beloved smartphone turning into an expensive glass rectangle?

What is it?
Touch Disease is a name given by electronics repair blog iFixit to a peculiar problem affecting some iPhones. Owners will find their devices suddenly stop working properly, the Touch ID sensor refuses to work at all, and grey bars appear along the top of the screen.

Apple hasn’t given any definitive information on the problem yet, but it appears to be caused by faulty touch controllers on the logic board. Those controllers are responsible for both the display and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, so it makes sense that a problem with that causes problems with the display and the finger input.

Who does it affect?
As far as we can tell, mostly iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners. As outspoken independent technician Louis Rossman explains, the problem may be caused by a design flaw in the 6 and 6 Plus. The touch controller chip doesn’t have underfill between it and the logic board. Underfill is basically glue that holds a chip in place, so without it, the chip is more susceptible to being knocked around and de-soldered.

Some repair technicians have also linked the flaw to Bendgate, the notorious issue with iPhone 6 Pluses that caused them to bend with little pressure. iPad Rehab’s Jessa Jones told Cult of Mac that the problem might be caused by the fact that bigger iPhone 6 units do tend to bend when a certain force is applied.

"Nearly 90 percent of devices with Touch IC Disease are iPhone 6 Pluses,” Jones said. And it’s all because of Apple’s design choices. In the iPhone 6, instead of using a metal shield to protect the board like on the iPhone 5s, Apple reverted to a sticker shield. The sticker doesn’t protect the chips as good when the board bends and the Touch IC chip is especially susceptible to damage when the phone bends.

“This is a signature failure,” said Jones. “Every phone has one, but this one is a signature failure that got to epic proportions.”

What does Apple say?
The real problem here is that Apple is refusing to acknowledge this as a problem worthy of repair or replacement. Since most of the devices are out of warranty, and Apple doesn’t do advanced fixes like resoldering a chip in store, customers’ only option (according to Apple) is to buy a new iPhone.

Now, there’s a good chance that if enough people make enough noise about the problem, Apple will issue an extended warranty program and fix affected devices free of charge. It’s happened in the past with faulty Macbooks (and, to an extent, with the iPhone 4’s Antennagate), so with enough complaining, it’s a good possibility.

How likely am I to suffer it?
There’s a thread on Apple’s support forums that’s currently 62 pages long and growing, indicating that this isn’t a small, localized problem. But since the problem appears to be caused by physical damage, just taking good care of your phone might be enough to keep you safe. A strong case should limit the chance of any bending and help protect the chip from damage, so that’s not a bad idea.

If your phone does start malfunctioning, some repair technicians will be able to fix the damage. Since it involves potentially replacing a chip on the logic board, it’s a fix for more specialized repair shops. It’s a lot more involved than replacing a cracked screen, so using a well-reviewed mail-in technician like Rossman is a better idea than your local “i fix iFones.”

Apple might be still damned if it does and damned if it doesn’t

For years, Apple has been held to a completely different than the rest of the tech industry. Whereas a company like Google can pursue and then shutter any number of ambitious “moonshots” and ultimately be applauded for their efforts, Apple is routinely criticized for not coming up with a device as revolutionary as the iPhone every 5 years. In a broad sense, Apple is forced to endure a level of criticism that no other tech company on the planet has to deal with.

To be fair, a good deal of the attention and scrutiny directed at Apple is not undeserved. After all, the company over the past few decades helped transform not one but three separate industries. That being the case, it’s only natural for expectations surrounding Apple to be a little bit higher than it is for others. But sometimes the critiques flowing in Apple’s direction become so ludicrous that we have to pause, take a step back, and point out just how absurd the tech press can become.

Recently, Apple executives, along with two Siri scientists, sat down for a fascinating interview with Steven Levy of Backchannel. The piece provided an incredible glimpse into some of the work Apple is doing in the field of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning. For a company as notoriously secretive as Apple, the informative expose was a must-read for anyone who follows the company in particular or the tech industry at large. Not only was the piece informative from a technical perspective, it provided no shortage of details explaining how Apple’s ongoing work in AI has helped improve the overall iPhone user experience.
But in quick order, it didn’t take long for critics to start taking jabs at Apple for an ostensible PR piece that tech companies all across Silicon Valley routinely engage in. From Amazon and Microsoft to Google and Facebook, every major tech company you can think often make its top executives available for what are effectively “let us brag about our technology” features.

And that’s all great and entertaining, but when Apple does it, it’s because there’s a problem. In fact, in the wake of the aforementioned Backchannel piece, some people went so far as to either imply or outright state that Apple never engaged in this type of desperate PR when Steve Jobs was around. Yes, it’s 2016 and some people still can’t help but compare everything Apple does to what they think Apple would have done if Steve Jobs was still alive.
It’s pure nonsense, but Apple today still finds itself stuck in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” predicament.

To wit, here’s Owen Williams’ take.

It was actually one of the more substantive looks inside Apple we’ve seen in a long time.
And here's Om Malik yearns for the Apple of yore.

Curiously, Malik just a few weeks ago had this to say:
I was on Leo Laporte’s TWIT show yesterday and ended up going on a bit of a rant about Apple and “Planet of the Apps.” My view on “content” efforts like this is pretty simple. It is distracting, non-core to Apple and basically avoids the bigger challenges: how to add data and Internet DNA into a company that has managed to struggle with services. The App Store needs more smarts and better search, and it needs to take a contemporary, data-centric approach to surfacing apps. “Planet of the Apps” is just an old media-like thinking applied to “apps.” I might be the only one who feels that way, but the reality is that these kinds of efforts are really not good for Apple at a time when it is competing with Google, Amazon and Facebook.
So Apple comes in with a math-heavy piece where they detail some of the advanced AI things they’re implementing across the entirety of their software suite and Malik has a problem with that too?

Android 7.0 has a hidden feature that could finally make it better than iOS

Android and iOS have been in a user-interface war for years. Who is winning really depends on who you ask, but a secret feature buried in the code for Android 8.0 Nougat shows a feature that would give Android the upper hand.

Android Police uncovered details and screenshots of a navigation bar customizer hidden in the code for Android Nougat. It’s not currently active, as it was pulled from the code base for being “not ready,” but a tipster managed to recreate the feature and provide screenshots.

The customizer appears to be powerful. All the navigation buttons are removable, and you can replace them with options like a clipboard or a keyboard switcher. Keycodes also allow you to assign any keyboard action you want to a button on the navbar. Basically, anything you’ve ever wanted to be able to do from the navigation bar is up for grabs.

Once you’ve decided on the actions, you’re able to move those buttons around in any order you want on the navbar. It’s a big change for Android, which has mostly stuck with the same navigation options for years, especially once physical buttons started to die out.

Making the navbar customizable is an obvious move for Android. The navbar itself is a little old, and arguably a waste of space in the user interface. But add the option for customized buttons, and navigating around Android just became faster and easier than ever. Jailbroken iOS users, eat your heart out.

World’s largest aircraft damaged on 2nd test flight

The developer of the world’s largest aircraft says the blimp-shaped airship sustained damage after it made a bumpy landing Wednesday on its second test flight in eastern England.

Hybrid Air Vehicles said it is trying to figure out what caused the rough landing of the 302-foot (92-meter) Airlander 10 during its 100 minute flight Wednesday in Bedfordshire, north of London.

“The Airlander experienced a heavy landing and the front of the flight deck has sustained some damage, which is currently being assessed,” the company said. “Both pilots and the ground crew are safe and well and the aircraft is secured and stable at its normal mooring location.”

A hybrid of blimp, helicopter and airplane, the Airlander is able to stay aloft for days at a time. It is designed to use less fuel than a plane, but carry heavier loads than conventional airships.

The aircraft was initially developed for the U.S. military for use in surveillance in Afghanistan.

Android 7.0 Nougat is finally here, but when will your phone get it?

Android 7.0 Nougat is here! It’s finally here! But, well, not really…

Last year, Google released Android 6.0 Marshmallow and as of Google’s latest Android version distribution numbers, it’s only installed on 15.2% of active Android devices. To quote a certain presidential candidate, sad! Despite the fact that Android update adoption continues to mosey along at a dreadfully slow pace, the company on Monday released yet another new version of Android.

If history has taught us anything — and it has — Android Nougat will become the most popular version of Android sometime in 2018. But don’t worry, because you likely won’t have to wait quite that long to get it on your Android smartphone.

When Apple releases a new iOS software update, it’s released directly to end users. By controlling iPhone hardware and software Apple is able to bypass third parties (though third parties are obviously involved with testing). Android, of course, works differently in most cases.

When Google releases a new Android software update, it has to be tested by Google. And Android device makers. And wireless carriers. Compounding matters is the fact that while Apple only sells a few different iPhone models, Android vendors offer many different phone models at any given time. So, while Google did in fact release Android 7.0 Nougat to the public on Monday afternoon, the only people who can use it for the time being are owners of Google’s Nexus branded smartphones.

So, when are you going to get Android 7?

If you’re reading this right now, the odds are fairly good that you’re a savvy tech fan who owns a fairly recent flagship Android phone model as opposed to an older phone or a mid-range device. Newer flagships are always the first to get Android updates, and things trickle down from there. As for when the latest crop of smartphones is set to get Nougat, the bad news is that info is scarce for the time being. As both ZDNet and Wired report, however, we can learn a bit from the past.

So far only HTC has confirmed anything, having stated that the HTC 10, HTC One A9, HTC One M9 and unspecified other handsets will be updated to Android 7.0 Nougat later this year. That sounds a bit vague indeed, but there are only four months left in 2016 so the wait can’t be too long.

As for other smartphone vendors, you’re probably in fairly good shape if you have a newer Motorola smartphone because Moto is generally quick with updates. LG has a good track record as well. Samsung generally takes a bit longer, which is certainly understandable since it sells far more smartphone models and works with far more carrier partners than any other Android vendors out there. So, if you have a Samsung smartphone, odds are good that you’ll still be running an older Android version when you ring in the new year.

Samsung will be the iPhone 8’s biggest fan

Apple will not come out with a brand new iPhone redesign this year, that much seems to be crystal clear. But an increasing number of reports claims that at least one of the 2017 iPhones will bring over radical changes. Specifically, Apple is expected to launch a Galaxy S7 edge-like curved iPhone 7 successor next year that will feature a flexible OLED display, a first for the iPhone maker. A new report from Asia indicates that Samsung is already preparing for that rumored iPhone 8 (or whatever Apple calls it), but not to fight against it with a novel Galaxy S7 successor of its own. Instead, Samsung might become the biggest fan of that new iPhone.

According to The Korea Herald, Samsung is getting ready to mass-produce the OLED panels that Apple will need for the redesigned iPhone. And Samsung may be the only supplier of such displays for the OLED iPhone.

Samsung has been seen installing production equipment at one of its Korea Plants recently, according to local news daily Chosun Biz. The company installed the new equipment at its A3 OLED plant in South Chungcheong Province, looking to beef up OLED production ahead.

The Herald says that Samsung already dominates the OLED market with nearly 97% market share, but it plans to triple its production next year.

Currently, Samsung makes some 9 million 5-inch OLED displays each month, but that number might soar to 30 million units next year. While Apple’s new iPhone will probably be one of the main beneficiaries, other smartphone makers will also adopt OLED displays for high-end handsets.

Meanwhile, LG is lagging behind, the report said, as its OLED screen yields are still low.

5 best new features in Android 7.0 Nougat

Android 7.0 Nougat is finally here! Well, sort of… Nougat has indeed finally been released to the public, but it’s only available on a handful of Google’s Nexus-branded devices. If you own anything else — and odds are very good that you do — you’re in for a bit of a wait before an Android 7.0 update is made available for your smartphone. Owners of the latest and greatest flagships can likely expect an update to roll out sometime in the next few months, maybe even before the New Year rolls around if you’re lucky.

The good news, Android fans, is that Android 7.0 Nougat is worth the wait. It might not seem like the new update has much flash and flair on its surface, but the truth is that Android N is a massive update packed full of terrific new features. In this post, we’ll cover the five best additions to Google’s brand new version of Android.

Instant Apps

Google’s new Instant Apps feature debuts in Android 7.0 and while it hasn’t gotten as much press as it should, it really is an exciting new addition to Android. In fact, we would go as far as to call it the biggest change to app stores since Apple first introduced its on-device app portal all those years ago.

In a nutshell, Instant Apps lets Android users begin using an app in the Google Play store instantly. You don’t have to buy it — heck, you don’t even have to download it. Simply open the app’s store page and you can begin testing it immediately to see if it’s something you might be interested in downloading.

This is a killer feature that really is a game-changer for users.

Multi-window App Support

Samsung’s Galaxy Note smartphones have had this feature for quite some time, as have a few other Android phones. Now, all handsets can take full advantage of huge displays that have become increasingly popular over the years.

With Android 7.0 Nougat, Google has added the ability for users to open two apps side by side on the screen. That means you can watch YouTube videos while you respond to emails, read a webpage on half the screen while Facebook is updating on the other half, and so on.

Power-Saving Features

Google’s new “Doze” feature debuted in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but the company is kicking its power-saving features up a notch in Android 7.0.

The original feature puts a smartphone or tablet in a dormant state when it’s not being used, but Android Nougat’s new “Doze on the Go”feature takes things a step further. Now, users will enjoy Doze’s battery-saving features even while the phone is in motion, anytime the display is off.

Also new in Android Nougat is Project Svelte, which stops apps from waking up each time a device’s network connection status changes.

Virtual Reality

Last but certainly not least is Daydream. Google saw all these different companies building separate virtual reality platforms, while likely leads to incompatibilities and can potentially hurt the VR market in the long run. In an effort to unify the mobile VR experience, Google has created the Daydream hardware and software platform for virtual reality.

This way vendors like Samsung, LG and others don’t each have to build their own VR platform or partner with different third parties. And for developers, it potentially means they can build one VR app or experience that will work across all Android devices.

Background System Updates

This new feature isn’t the sexiest addition you’ll find in Android 7.0 Nougat, but it truly is nothing short of a game-changer.

With Android Nougat, operating system updates will happen in the background, just like they do in Google’s Chrome OS. The system will download OTA updates in the background over Wi-Fi and install them as a separate system image on a device’s storage. Then the next time the device reboots, it’ll boot to the newly updated image. Voila!

Here’s a quick note from Google’s documentation on the feature:

Android N also adds some important new features to help keep users safer and more secure. Inspired by how Chromebooks apply updates, we’re introducing seamless updates, so that new Android devices built on N can install system updates in the background. This means that the next time a user powers up their device, new devices can automatically and seamlessly switch into the new updated system image.

Is Pokemon Go already dying Now?

Considering just how much of a stir it caused last month, you might have expected Pokemon Goto dominate the mobile charts forever. You wouldn’t have been the only one, but as it turns out, you definitely would have been wrong.

According to Bloomberg, data from mobile marketing companies Apptopia, Sensor Tower and SurveyMonkey all show that Pokemon Gohas shrunk from a peak of nearly 45 million daily active users to 30 million in less than a month. Daily downloads, engagement, and time spent on the app have all declined sharply as well, with the downward trend expected to continue.

Although this is bad news for Niantic, The Pokemon Company and Nintendo (which inexplicably saw its stock skyrocket before investors realized Nintendo had almost nothing to do with the game), it’s good news for other app developers.

“Given the rapid rise in usage of the Pokémon Go app since the launch in July, investors have been concerned that this new user experience has been detracting from time spent on other mobile focused apps,” Axiom Capital Management analyst Victor Anthony toldBloomberg. “The declining trends should assuage investor concerns about the impact ofPokémon Go on time spent on [Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and other popular mobile apps.]”

There are countless reasons for this decline. First off, the game is still missing several features that the developer revealed before the game even launched (such as trading). There’s also the bugs and glitches that have plagued the game since day one. Many of those bugs have been patched, but they soured the experience.

Here’s the thing: without significant updates,Pokemon Go was never going to thrive in the long run. There’s nothing you can do now that you couldn’t do a month and a half ago. But as soon as Niantic adds trading, unleashes the Legendary Pokemon and starts hinting at bringing some of the other 500+ Pokemon to the game, players will start flocking back toPokemon Go in droves.

Android Nougat will have regularly scheduled maintenance updates

Amid all the hubbub of Android 7.0 officially arriving, we’re not seeing a whole lot of new information from Google. Indeed, practically everything about the consumer version of Nougat is identical to the fifth Developers Preview, so while it’s great that Nougat is finally here, there’s not much we haven’t already seen going on. Google did, however, sneak one tiny little morsel into theirannouncement blog post.

In the post, which “takes the final wrapper” off Nougat, Android VP of Engineering Dave Burke gives us all the information we want to hear. We know which devices Nougat is coming toand how to get our hands on it today if we aren’t willing to wait for the rollout. But what the post also makes note of is the fact that Nougat will be getting regular maintenance updates over the coming quarters.

Basically, although Nougat is ‘finished,’ there are still some nicks and divots that the developers want to polish over. They’ve even put out the call to keep reporting bugs as you find them so that they can address these issues in the scheduled maintenance updates.

We’ll be closing open bugs logged against Developer Preview builds soon, but please keep the feedback coming! If you still see an issue that you filed in the preview tracker, just file a new issue against Android 7.0 in the AOSP issue tracker.

What are your thoughts regarding these maintenance updates? Let us know your take in the comments below!

A curved OLED screen might be the front of Apple’s new iPhone Pro, coming next year

For most of the year, rumors were flying that the 2016 iPhone range would include a bigger, more tricked-out ‘Pro’ model, along with an OLED screen. The rumors about sharper screens have been pushed to next year (when it’s looking reasonably certain we’ll be seeing an OLED iPhone), and now it looks like the iPhone Pro will have to wait until 2017 too.

A report in Nikkei claims that in 2017, Apple will ship a ‘Pro’ model with a 5.5-inch curved display that will use an OLED panel. It will debut alongside two other new iPhone models, which will have flat screens with older LCD displays.

The advantages of OLED technology make it a no-brainer upgrade for Apple, which has been the only big phone manufacturer not to at least try releasing a phone with OLED display. Samsung’s curved-edge phones have also been a big hit with a particular niche of users, so Apple’s move towards a curved edge looks more and more like a play to steal back customers from the Note 7.

Along with a new Pro model wielding OLED tech, all of next year’s iPhone range should see a significant change in design. Nikkei confirms earlier reports that the 2017 iPhone will have an all-glass display and chassis, which will only be linked with a metal bezel. Major iPhone supplier Foxconn has reportedly been working hard to develop the new capability in time to make Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone.

The move to OLED screens will be big for Apple’s other suppliers, which have seen falling sales due to slower iPhone orders this year. But numerous reports have said that Apple’s interest in OLED displays has driven growth among screen suppliers including Samsung, which is expected to make some of the displays for next year’s iPhone Pro.

The big overhaul in the iPhone line is a sign of slightly worrying times for Apple. The company is far from dead, but declining iPhone sales this year are expected to continue with the only-incremental upgrade for the iPhone 7. The slowdown is hitting Apple suppliers: Nikkei said that “major supplier has received component orders for 54 million units for the two new models, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, according to the source familiar with the iPhone design, and the lack of demand is likely to drag down shipments for the full year to less than 200 million handsets, compared with the 231 million phones Apple sold last year.”

But set all the Apple doom and gloom aside, and Nikkei‘s report is clearly good reading for anyone that likes good phones. A third, tricked-out iPhone is a sign that Apple is starting to realize different consumers will want slightly different things from their phones. A good number of people just want a small 4 or 4.7-inch handset, and certainly don’t need oodles of RAM. But for people who understand acronyms like OLED or like the feel of a curved-edge phone, an iPhone Pro will be long overdue.

Plus, all that extra space around the side will make a great place for the headphone jack to make a triumphant 2017 return.
