How to get the Android Nougat upgrade, if your phone is worthy

Android Nougat is available today! Well, sorta. Unlike rollouts of things like iOS or even Windows 10, Android updates happen over the course of months and years, not days. But starting today, a small number of lucky users can finally get their hands on the latest and greatest from Google.

Nexus devices should be seeing the upgrade as an over-the-air download today. Devices like the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, and Pixel C are all eligible for the upgrade. Google says that updates are delayed by carrier and region, so if you don’t see the update today, keep trying, as it should appear soon.

Android 7.0 Nougat brings much-needed updates like split-screen multitasking and better notifications, but a lot of the improvements we saw to Android and Google services at Google I/O don’t require the latest version of Android. The improved Google Assistant, for example, will run on any device that uses Google’s smart AI, and on-demand apps should be compatible with previous versions of Android.

To get the update is reasonable simple as a Nexus owner. Just ensure your device is backed up (because you always keep backups, right?), and head to Settings, scroll to the bottom, hit About phone, and check for downloads. If the download is available for your device, make sure you’re plugged in to a power source, and settle in for a download.

New invention could let your home Wi-Fi network track your every move

Whenever we see the word “tracking,” we expect to find out more details about a covert NSA operation that was unearthed in a new series of Snowden leaks, a story about an application that may have breached your privacy, or an online service that found novel ways of tracking its users. That is the future we live in. And that future is only getting better when it comes to smart connected devices able to perform magical tricks at home.

But for them to automate some of the smart home controls we set up, they’ll need to be able to figure out whether we’re present in a room. So, a team of researchers created a Wi-Fi tracking system that can recognize a person in a room by the way he or she interacts with Wi-Fi signals.

A laptop connected to a dumb Wi-Fi router would be able to tell exactly who it is at home with the help of the new invention.

Called FreeSense and available from a team of researchers from Northwestern Polytechnic University, the technology could be used in the future in connection with smart connected devices to automatically turn lights on and off in a home, adjust heating preferences and control multimedia. All without the user having to tell those devices he or she is at home, and wondering out and about in a certain room.

FreeSense uses interruptions in Wi-Fi waves to identify individuals in a room based on body shape and motion patterns, Motherboard reports. Even if there are multiple people in a room, the system can still tell them apart – though I’d imagine it would have a hard time determining what smart actions to take next.

“Due to the difference of body shapes and motion patterns, each person can have specific influence patterns on surrounding WIFI signals while she moves indoors, generating a unique pattern on the CSI time series of the WIFI device,” the team writes in its report. “FreeSense…is nonintrusive and privacy-preserving compared with existing methods [of human identification].”

In tests, FreeSense identified with 75% accuracy the individuals in a 30-square meter home. During the test, just one person would be in the room of the nine volunteers. When the system had to tell just two people apart, the accuracy rose to 95%.

The ideal number of people who can be identified by FreeSense is between two and six, the team said. With six people moving in the system, FreeSense would have an 88% ID accuracy.

It’s not known when the system would be commercially available, but more information about it are available at the source link. And yes, for the paranoid people out there, the system could probably be used for indoors surveillance and tracking operations.

Samsung sets to sell used flagship phones at deep discounts

For a leading smartphone company like Samsung, the only thing better than getting a customer to purchase a flagship smartphone is getting two different customers to purchase the same flagship smartphone.

As Samsung seeks new ways to boost earnings as the high-end smartphone market becomes a far less reliable source of growth, a new report sheds light on one of the new programs the company plans to implement. Smartphone buyers in the US and other markets continue to flock to newer installment plan options that let them make low monthly payments and trade in their phones each year for new models. Now, it appears as though Samsung is getting ready to launch a new program that will see it refurbish and sell all those used phones.

Reuters reporters Se Young Lee and Miyoung Kim stated in a new report on Monday that Samsung will launch a new program as soon as next year that will see Samsung resell used premium smartphones that have been traded in as part of the company’s upgrade program.

“The South Korean technology firm is looking for ways to sustain earnings momentum after reviving its mobile profits by restructuring its product line-up,” the report said. “As growth in the global smartphone market hits a plateau, Samsung wants to maximize its cost efficiency and keep operating margins above 10 percent.”

The report cites just a single anonymous source at Samsung, but Reuters obviously has a solid track record. Details are scarce, however — the reporters couldn’t determine what type of discounts Samsung plans to offer or even in which markets the refurbished phone program might become available.

Samsung’s plan to sell refurbished flagship phones seems like an obvious move, but the report does note that there is a risk involved. If smartphone shoppers have the option of purchasing used phones under warranty directly from Samsung at deep discounts, it could cannibalize sales of new smartphone models to an extent.

Samsung’s hot new Galaxy Note 7 still isn’t as fast as last year’s iPhone 6s

Yes, the Galaxy Note 7 is gorgeous, and it’s the phablet to beat this year. But the smartphone isn’t the fastest handset around, despite all its cutting-edge tech. It may very well do better in benchmark tests than its Android peers, but when it comes to finally taking down last year’s iPhone in real-world speed tests – something no flagship has been able to do – the Galaxy Note 7 fails miserably.

At this point, it’s not really unexpected to see Apple’s iPhones beat Samsung’s best phones in real-world testing. We’ve seen it time and again. And it’s certainly not a surprise with the Galaxy Note 7, since it features the same hardware used in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

Even so, it is a bit troubling to see the iPhone 6s dominate its rivals almost a year after it was launched. PhoneBuff put the handsets through a simple test: opening a set of apps on each phone in the same order, and then reopening them from memory, again in the same order. The iPhone 6s stormed past the Galaxy Note 7 in the test, which appears to have much more powerful hardware on paper.

Sure, there are some caveats here. The Galaxy Note 7 isn’t running the latest Android version available, although Android 7.0 Nougat isn’t out yet, so it couldn’t be. Also, I would have liked to see the comparison between the Galaxy Note 7 and the iPhone 6s Plus since they’re both phablets, but that would have probably had roughly the same results.

If that’s not enough, then xda-developers has an even deeper performance review of the handset. In a post titled “With the Note 7, Samsung still delivers embarrassing real-world performance,” the site explains everything that doesn’t go according to plan with the new smartphone.

This isn’t a regular quick video comparison. Instead, xda dives deep into what makes the Galaxy Note 7 tick and finds that the phone isn’t able to keep up with rivals. The Galaxy Note 7 is “trailing behind not just other Snapdragon 820 phones like the OnePlus 3 and HTC 10, but also the year-old Nexus 6P running on Android’s latest preview.”

The conclusion appears to be as follows: “Considering that Samsung packs the cream of today’s processing power with its UFS 2.0 storage, LPDDR4 RAM and the Snapdragon 820, we can begin to entertain the notion that something went wrong with Samsung’s implementation.”

Even worse, there appears to be extra heat coming off the phone when you least expect it. “Not only have we found issues in real-world performance, but some of our writers also came across uncomfortable heat (close to 40° Celsius) while doing mundane tasks such as listening to music or watching YouTube videos on LTE,” the site also noted.

Of course, some of these issues can be ironed out in future updates. But it’s certainly disconcerting to see the Galaxy Note 7 perform far worse in head-to-head performance tests than we would expect for a brand new flagship phone. Read the XDA review Here

Samsung Galaxy Tab S won’t be getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Are you still a proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy Tab S? It continues to be a great tablet, despite being in the market for over 2 years now. Whether you have the 8.4 or 10.5-inch version, chances are you continue to love the device. The sad news is Samsung doesn’t seem to feel the same way about it.

In a Facebook post, Samsung Mobile Netherlands recently confirmed there will be no update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the Galaxy Tab S series. This comes as a surprise to many, as the tablet has been seen running Marshmallow in benchmarks. Not to mention multiple rumors saying the update was coming.

The Korean manufacturer may have changed its mind… or maybe they really never had plans to update the tablet to the latest software. After all, this is a very old tablet in tech terms, so chances are it just reached its retirement age.

How many of you are still rocking a Samsung Galaxy Tab S? Is this a problem to you?

Lifestage is Facebook’s creepy new app for teens

Mark Zuckerberg really wants you to know that Facebook is not sooo 2004. First it wasInstagram’s Stories that mimicked Snapchat. Now the social networking giant has launched a completely separate app called Lifestage that does what Snapchat does, except Lifestage basically lets teens creep other teens that they don’t even know.

Facebook introduced Instagram Stories earlier this month and faced some criticism for copying Snapchat. Just like Snapchat, it allows users to post a slideshow of your favorite moments, which disappears after 24 hours. And it even lets you add drawings or stickers, just like Snapchat.

Facebook’s brand new app, Lifestage, is the latest attempt at proving that yes, Facebook can capture the new generation that uses Snapchat for chat, Venmo for money, andTinder for dates. I mean, it even has an age restriction. That’s right – if you’re over 22, then you can’t even see other people’s profiles.

Lifestage is basically an app that lets you create your profile using photos and videos: things you like, things you dislike, your facial expressions, your best friends etc. If 20 or more people from one school sign up, then that school is “unlocked,” meaning you can discover video profiles created by others in your school.

All of this is clearly a part of Facebook’s attempt to become more video-centric. Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized over and over again how important video consumption will become in the near future, and it seems like Facebook’s attempt at all-things-video domination is far from being over. But I’m not sure if Lifestage will successfully deliver the message.

Under the app description, Facebook warns:

Everything you post in Lifestage is always public and viewable by everyone, inside and outside your school. There is no way to limit the audience of your videos. We can’t confirm that people who claim to go to a certain school actually go to that school. All videos you upload to your profile are fully public content.

Sound a bit worrisome? When you are putting your face, your personal information, and your life on display, it’s not very reassuring to read that people that you don’t even know can view your profile. In other words, whether it’s a high school or a university, this app essentially allows 20-something-year-olds to creep one another. Plus, not to sound too unkind on humanity, but anyone could easily fake their profile to prey upon adolescents.

Video platforms mean huge potential, I know, and Instagram may be heading the right direction, but I’m not so sure about Lifestage. From a 22-year-old guy’s perspective, Facebook trying so hard to prove that it is hip makes it look… not hip.

Lifestage is currently only available for iOS devices, but we will be sure to let you know when it lands on Android!

The Hyperloop VR app shows how boring the future will be

I’ve seen Tomorrowland, so I know that the future is supposed to be full of flying cars and jetpacks. Elon Musk’s version of the future is a little less fanciful — it only involves levitating people through a partial vacuum at hundreds of miles an hour. But if this VR app that lets you try the Hyperloop experience is accurate, Musk’s future won’t be particularly exciting.

To support its Hyperloop pod design bid, the Delft University of Technology had an ad agency make an app that explains how Hyperloop and lets users virtually try out a Hyperloop trip. It’s whatever you call the polar opposite of a wild ride.

The app is available for iOS or Android. In addition to an explainer of Hyperloop technology and how it works, it lets you try a simulated journey from Paris to Amsterdam. Only, it could be a simulated journey from North Dakota to South Dakota for all I care. You sit in a small pod, watch the miles tick away (quite quickly) and stare at the inside of the pod. In case the app doesn’t work, you can replicate the experience by sitting in a room with a flickering tube light and a kitchen timer.

Of course, Hyperloop isn’t supposed to be a rollercoaster ride. The main benefit is speed and simplicity, and while loop-the-loops would certainly add to the entertainment value, the G-force would probably make you pass out.

While Hyperloop is looking promising from a technology standpoint, its adoption in the US still isn’t looking all that likely. The same problems that have prevented the rollout of highspeed trains still apply to Hyperloop, mostly that it’s difficult and expensive to build a completely straight track between two cities.

  • ETISALAT

What have etisalat actually done for us this past few month? absoluteley NOTHING!!! and it really getting on my nerves, how will a network just stay like that when others are busy bringing customers to themselves the only thing i could lay record about Etisalat is the fact that they recently brought new social me 1 day plan which i know many people are not using again because of one problem of the other, but if you still need to learn how this social me works see details here.
since etisalat have failed to be renewing the 4GB we did in april and that have kept many in the dark.
==>> Also MTN did not only slash thier data plans to cheaper price, Etisalat also did same thing and it also similar to the one of MTN see more details here.

less I forget, i did not include the Normal Etisalat social me and chat pack tweak as i always do on this post, the reason is because Etisalat social me and chat pack is now data capped, and the

information reaching us states that the monthly sub is capped at 700MB while the weekly sub is capped at just 300MB, this came as a shock to everyone and really made us to stop using the social me tweak.

so this is all i could map out from etisalat this JUNE, see more post about Etisalat data plans and free browsing tweak HERE

Someone figured out how to double iPhone battery life without making it thicker

One of the ugliest design choices for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s series is the protruding rear camera, which is a compromise between Apple’s design and camera teams. Some buyers concerned with battery life still say that Apple should increase the size of the iPhone and fix both the camera bump and battery life with one move. But Apple’s phones aren’t getting any thicker, and the camera bumps will still be there in the upcoming iPhone 7 models.

However, there’s an MIT spinoff company that has already figured out how to double iPhone battery life without making any changes to the phone’s thickness. And unlike other promising new battery technologies, this new type of battery is actually heading to mass production.

Called SolidEnergy Systems, the startup developed an “anode-free” lithium metal battery that is twice as dense as lithium-ion batteries, and just as safe and long-lasting, MIT Newsreports.

“With two-times the energy density, we can make a battery half the size, but that still lasts the same amount of time, as a lithium-ion battery,” said CEO of SolidEnergy and inventor Qichao Hu. “Or we can make a battery the same size as a lithium-ion battery, but now it will last twice as long.”

The company demonstrated the first working prototype in October 2015 using the iPhone 6’s battery as a comparison tool. The SolidEnergy battery was just half the size of the lithium-ion battery in the iPhone, yet it offered 2.0 amp hours, slightly more than the iPhone’s 1.8 amp hour battery.

The company plans to bring its battery technology to drones this November, to smartphones and wearables in 2017, and to electric cars a year later.

The new battery technology uses an ultrathin lithium metal foil for the anode (the negative electrode), which is one-fifth the thickness of a traditional lithium metal anode and “several times thinner and lighter than traditional graphite, carbon, or silicon anodes.” This is how the company was able to shrink down the size of the battery without losing battery life.

SolidEnergy also came up with a solid and liquid hybrid electrolyte solution that allows the battery to operate safely at room temperature. The resulting product is a battery that has the energy capacity of lithium metal batteries, but the safety and longevity of lithium-ion batteries that operate at room temperature.

Now someone just needs to fix that camera bump…

Leaked photos just revealed Lenovo’s next-gen Moto Z smartphone

At this point it’s practically impossible for rival companies to compete with Samsung when it comes to flagship Android phones. For one thing, Samsung’s marketing and advertising budget reaches into the double-digit billions, which is simply impossible for any other Android vendor to match or even approach. On top of that, Samsung happens to be making the best Android-powered smartphones in the world right now. As we explained in detail in ourGalaxy Note 7 review, Samsung’s new Note 7 is completely unmatched.

As Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 7 launches in the US and other markets around the world, a new leak just revealed Lenovo’s upcoming next-generation Moto Z smartphone. It certainly won’t come anywhere close to competing with the Galaxy Note 7 where sales are concerned, but eager Android fans should still be excited.

If you haven’t read it already, you should definitely take a moment to read our full Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid review. Lenovo didn’t do itself any favors by agreeing to make these phones Verizon exclusives in the US at launch. But if you spend even a little bit of time with either of these phones you’ll see just how far Moto flagship handsets have come. These devices are gorgeous, insanely powerful (the highest AnTuTu scores we’ve ever seen), and the modular system Lenovo built is outstanding.

Now, we’ve gotten a glimpse at the next Moto Z phone Lenovo plans to launch.

Twitter leaker The Malignant has posted photosfrom an unnamed source that appear to show the much-rumored Moto Z Play. According to recent leaks, the Moto Z Play will feature a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with 1080p resolution, a Snapdragon 625 processor, either 2GB or 3GB of RAM depending on the version, a 16-megapixel camera, the new Moto Mod modular system, and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with an upgrade to Nougat already in the works. Oh, and it’ll also have a standard 3.5mm audio jack according to rumors — neither the Moto Z or Moto Z Force have a dedicated headphone port.

The phone is essentially expected to be a lower-cost version of the Moto Z, which might even start at around $300 unlocked. The leaked photos can be seen below.

Nokia to Release New Phones and Tablets in Q4, 2016

Industry rumblings are pointing towards a bit of a Nokia revival in the not too distant future, with the the company’s marketing chief recently insisting that Nokia will “rise again” . Now, Nokia executive Mike Wang, president of the joint management team in China, has confirmed that 3 or perhaps 4 new Nokia-branded Android devices are set to be unveil in the fourth quarter of 2016. These devices will be split between new smartphone and tablet launches.

While the company expects to make an announcement or two before the end of 2016, the actual launch could be pushed back into early 2017, depending on testing and development. HMD, the Finnish company made up of ex-Nokia and ex-Microsoft employees that snagged the licensing rights to the brand earlier this year, will be the ones designing these new Nokia handsets, which will then be manufactured by Foxconn.

The company didn’t spill any details about the specifications of its upcoming smartphones and tablets, nor their targeted price points. However, a rumor that appeared earlier in the year suggests that Nokia is planning two premium phones, which will be powered by Android 7.0 Nougat. The Nokia smartphones are reported to feature 5.2 and 5.5-inch QHD OLED displays, a Snapdragon 820 processor, a 22.6MP camera, and a metal body with water and dust resistance.

Along with high-end smartphones, HMD is expected to unveil two new Nokia feature phones in the next 6 months. Nokia also completed a $191 million acquisition of Withings in May, opening up an avenue into the connected halth market. Clearly Nokia is working to get itself back into the smartphone game, but are you excited to see what the company has to offer after all this time?

iOS and Android inch closer to owning 100% of the smartphone market

The latest research numbers from Gartner reveal that iOS and Android are inching ever closer towards completely owning 100% of the entire global smartphone market. According to the latest figures, sales of Android and iOS handsets during the recent June quarter accounted for 99.1% of all smartphone sales worldwide. Broken down by platform, Android devices accounted for 86.2% of sales while iPhone sales accounted for 12.9% of sales.

As evidenced by the chart below, sales of Windows and Blackberry devices have effectively been reduced down to mere footnotes. The share of Windows devices, for example, dropped down from an already unimpressive 2.5% during the June 2015 quarter to just 0.6% during the most recent quarter.

If we look more closely and divide up marketshare across individual handset manufacturers, it’s no surprise that Samsung is still the big name to beat. Indeed, three out of the top five handset manufacturers enjoyed year over year growth during the last quarter, with Apple being a notable exception. That, of course, shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given that Apple over the past two quarters has posted two year-over-year declines in iPhone sales.

For some historical context, it’s interesting to note that both Samsung and Apple’s share of the smartphone market have fallen off over the last few years, primarily due to the emergence of brands like Huawei and Xiaomi. For example, Samsung and Apple’s share of the smartphone market in 2013 checked in at 31% and 15.6% respectively.

The Galaxy Note 7 with 6GB RAM you wanted to buy may be coming soon

Anything over 4GB of RAM in a smartphone is overkill at this point. However, that doesn’t mean that a device that packs 6GB of RAM (or even more) won’t be appealing to buyers, particularly a high-end handset that’s already very popular with fans. For the longest time, the Galaxy Note 7 was rumored to be one of these 6GB RAM unicorns, but the device Samsung unveiled a few weeks ago was (from that perspective) a let-down. All Galaxy Note 7 versions out there, except a select few that are going to China, will have just 4GB of RAM inside.

Samsung confirmed a few days ago that a Galaxy Note 7 model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is indeed real, and it’s supposed to help Samsung compete against Chinese smartphone makers that have equipped their devices with the same amount of memory. Before that, documentation from a regulatory body in China confirmed that such a device exists.

According to PlayfulDroid, Samsung has confirmed that it will launch the 6GB Galaxy Note 7 in China on August 26 during an official event. But don’t get too excited about it. Just because it exists, it doesn’t mean Samsung will bring it to other markets.

Other distinctive features of this model aside from the memory bump and storage increase include a new hybrid SIM/microSD tray that would support two SIM cards at once.

The 6GB version is rumored to have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor inside, rather than the Exynos 8890 that’s found in some Galaxy Note 7 models.

Pricing details have not been listed, but you can expect to pay a premium for more memory and storage on this Android flagship –

7 awesome iOS 10 features you didn’t know existed

With the iPhone 7 release now just a few weeks away, we’re also inching closer towards the release of iOS 10. Packed with a number of compelling features, Apple has been steadily rolling out iterative betas to both developers and the public at large over the past few weeks. We’ve had some time to play around with and explore some of the great features iOS 10 has to offer and have compiled a short but sweet list highlighting some of the cooler new features that didn’t manage to make Apple’s keynote at WWDC this year.

We’ve covered a few intriguing iOS 10 features already — such as a new Wake Alarm app designed to improve sleeping patterns and a new Mapping feature designed to help you remember where you parked — but now we’ve unearthed a few other iOS 10 nuggets that should have you excited and ready to upgrade come September.

Never run out of storage

With the iPhone 7, rumor has it that Apple will finally get rid of the entry-level 16GB model that it has dutifully relied on for years And with good reason, 16GB just isn’t enough to cut it these days, especially in an era filled with high-res photos and 4K video. Now for those who are already close to maxing out their storage on their current devices, iOS 10 has a new storage optimization feature that should help clear up some space.

With iOS 10, there’s a new setting that lets users instruct their device to automatically remove songs that haven’t been played in a while. This should prove to be a particularly useful feature given that there are undoubtedly a ton of 16GB iPhone devices still in circulation.

Share your current location with friends more easily

With the revamped Messages app in iOS 10, it’s now easier than ever to share your current location. Specifically, the messages app is now context aware and will prompt users to share their location in response to certain questions. As you can see from the example below, if someone asks “Where are you?”, the ability to share one’s “Current Location” automatically pops up as an option.

You can remove stock iOS apps, finally!

For years, iOS users have lamented the fact that Apple’s built-in iOS apps — Stocks, Compass, Weather etc. — could not be deleted. With iOS 10, Apple has finally decided to end years of prolonged frustration by enabling us to essentially delete nearly every app that comes pre-installed on iOS.
Briefly, the following apps will be able to be deleted once iOS 10 drops.

• Calendar
• Compass
• Contacts
• FaceTime
• Find My Friends
• Home
• iBooks
• iTunes Store
• iCloud Drive
• Mail
• Maps
• Music
• News
• Notes
• Podcasts
• Reminders
• Stocks
• Tips
• Videos
• Voice Memos
• Watch app
• Weather

As a quick aside, Apple notes that if you remove the Contacts app, your contacts data will still be available via the iPhone’s Phone app.

Easily unsubscribe from mailing lists

The Mail app in iOS 10 makes it a breeze to unsubscribe from mailing lists you’d rather avoid altogether. If you happen to be reading an email that’s part of a mailing list, iOS 10 will provide a useful “unsubscribe” option easily located at the top of the page. It may seem like something minor, but it sure beats having to rummage through an email and look for a cleverly hidden “unsubscribe” option.

Live Filters for Live Photos

Originally introduced in iOS 9, Live Photos is a great feature that allows users to take living and breathing photographs. While not everyone has a use for Live Photos, users with kids or pets seem to be huge fans of the feature. With iOS 9, however, Live Photos can’t be used with the photo filters that come built into Apple’s camera app. With iOS 10, that is about to change. Now, Live Photos aficionados will be able to take advantage of Apple’s photo filters and the Live Photos feature at the same time.

iOS 10 supports inline video playback for the iPhone

iOS 10 finally makes it possible to watch videos in mobile Safari inline without having to watch it full-screen. As iGeeksBlog points out, once a video starts playing in full-screen mode, users can simply tap the resize button located in the lower right hand corner of the screen whereupon they’ll be able to watch the video within any given webpage.

Read Receipts can now be toggled on a user-by-user basis

iOS 10 makes it possible to toggle the Read Receipts option on/off on an individual basis. This is a welcome improvement from iOS 9 where the feature was either applied en masse to everyone or to no one at all.

The Galaxy Note 7 has a big problem, and it might also affect the iPhone 7

The Galaxy Note 7 is the talk of the town right now , which makes sense since it’s the hottest Samsung phone ever made. But no phone is perfect and the Galaxy Note 7 may have one issue you need to be aware of right now. In fact, if you plan to buy the iPhone 7 come September, this is certainly something you’ll need to remember because it might impact Apple’s new phones as well.

See specs of Galaxy Note 7 Here

The Galaxy Note 7’s Gorilla Glass 5 screen should withstand accidental drops better than its predecessors. It should also prevent bending accidents. But, for some reason, the screen is apparently much more vulnerable to scratches than you’d expect. That means you’ll need to use a screen protector on the Galaxy Note 7 to make sure that you don’t scratch it while it’s in your pocket.

YouTube channel JerryRigEverything , which performs the same stress tests on every newly released smartphone, put the Galaxy Note 7 through its standard durability tests. They found the Galaxy Note 7 to be a lot more susceptible to scratching than the Galaxy S7 models, which is certainly surprising considering that Gorilla Glass 5 is Corning’s latest product.
The iPhone 7 is also expected to feature Gorilla Glass 5, although that’s a feature yet to be confirmed.

Apple last year said the iPhone 6s has the strongest mobile glass available, suggesting that it used Gorilla Glass 4. Now that the next-gen Corning glass is available, many people expect it to be used on the new 2016 iPhones.

The Galaxy Note 7 did remarkably well in the rest of the YouTuber’s durability tests. So, as long as you make sure you’ve got a screen protector on, your new Note should be fine.

Rumor says Android 7.0 Nougat will be released next week

Get your affairs in order, Nexus device owners, because the final version of Android 7.0 Nougat may be released in just a few short days. We already knew that Nougat is set to land in August, and it looks like Google will indeed deliver Android 7.0 on time to supported devices. A new report from a Canadian wireless carrier provides a solid release date for the operating system, so if you’re rocking a Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P, your wait is almost over.

According to a spreadsheet found on Telus Forums that are maintained by community managers, 9to5Google reports, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P should get Android Nougat on August 22nd, which is this coming Monday.

As you can see, the list also includes update details for other devices, including non-Nexus hardware that will only receive security updates, or have already received them. And yes, we feel the pain of Telus Samsung A5 owners who have only just now made the jump to Marshmallow, according to the same document.

If you’re on a non-Nexus device, you’ll have to wait for the official Android N update to hit your phone or tablet. The Galaxy Note 7 might be one of the first handsets to be upgraded, but won’t happen until some point around November.

One other reason to be excited about Nougat is that Google usually launches new Nexus hardware alongside its latest stable Android releases. Recent rumors say that the 2016 Nexus smartphones will be unveiled at some point in September, and possibly hit stores by October 4th.

That said, we do expect Google to make a formal announcement once it’s ready to roll out the final Android 7.0 build. That should happen in the coming days, assuming this rumored August 22nd release date is accurate.

Over to you, what do you think about this post?

Another new report says the 256GB iPhone 7 of your dreams is on the way

One of the things Apple’s new iPhone 7 is supposed to fix is storage. Apple is rumored to ditch the 16GB storage tier and replace it with 32GB, and some reports even claim that Apple will have 256GB iPhone 7 versions in stores, which should address all your storage needs. A new report indicates that will indeed be the case, suggesting that Apple is putting increased pressure on the NAND memory market, with suppliers raising prices as supply fails to meet demand.

According to Digitimes, there’s strong demand for memory for new smartphones, “particularly the iPhone 7 featuring up to 256GB of storage.” Assuming Apple’s new iPhones will sell well, NAND flash prices will not drop anytime soon. But if iPhone 7 demand is lower than expected, NAND memory might be cheaper starting in the first quarter of 2017.

Samsung and SK Hynix are two major NAND flash suppliers that have raised their prices, citing a pull-in of orders from their system customers, with chip shortages being more severe than expected. This might be good news for iPhone owners looking to upgrade to the iPhone 7 this year, but Android fans expecting to see a similar bump in built-in storage might have to wait since Apple is gobbling up all the supply.

Even Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 7 only in a 64GB version, but the phone supports microSD cards of up to 256GB (technically it’s up to 2TB, though 256GB is the largest available card right now), which would give users 320GB of storage on the flagship phone. It’s not clear, however, whether Samsung’s choice has anything to do with this NAND flash shortage.

The report does say that the NAND price increase might hinder the penetration rate of SSDs in the notebook market, affecting demand before the back-to-school season.

Apple’s influence on NAND memory prices is pretty obvious. The company is a critical consumer of NAND chips, having bought 15% of the overall NAND supply in 2015 for its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s lines.

The 7 best features on Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 (none of which are on the iPhone)

We’re just two short days away from Samsung’s official Galaxy Note 7 release, and the reviews are in. We covered the hot new phablet in our in-depth Galaxy Note 7 review and here’s the TL;DR version: It will be the best phablet on the planet when it launches this Friday, and it’ll almost certainly still be the best phablet on the planet next month, even after Apple releases its next-generation iPhone 7 Plus.

We obviously recommend reading our full Galaxy Note 7 review before you reach any conclusions. But for those looking for a quick overview of the best new functionality Samsung’s latest phablet has to offer, we’ve compiled the phone’s seven hottest features in this post.

S Pen

Samsung’s S Pen is at the center of the Note experience and it’s better than ever. The physical stylus itself has been improved so that writing with it feels almost like writing with a ballpoint pen. Then, the Note 7’s software has been further enhanced with great new S Pen features like a GIF maker, a translate feature, a magnifier and more. My favorite new feature is the ability to pin a memo to the phone’s sleep screen, so you don’t even have to unlock the handset in order to see the memo.

Water- and dust-resistance

This is a huge deal, and it speaks for itself. The Galaxy Note 7’s IP68 certification means that it can be completely submerged in water and come away working just fine. As expensive as flagship smartphones are these days — the Note 7 costs $850 — every single high-end handset should have an IP68 rating.

Camera

Every smartphone out there obviously has a camera these days, but none of them can touch the Dual Pixel rear camera on the Note 7. The low-light performance is phenomenal, it has the fastest auto-focus on the planet, and picture clarity is unmatched. The only complaint in my review was that it’s the same exact camera as the one featured on the Galaxy S7. We’ve always seen progress made from model to model, so I hope this isn’t the start of a trend.

Display

Samsung is simply the best in the business when it comes to smartphone displays, and the Galaxy Note 7 pushes it even further ahead of its rivals. The quad HD Super AMOLED display on the Note 7 is breathtaking, featuring incredible clarity and colors that leap off the screen. You won’t find a better display on a phone. Period.

Expandable storage

This seems like a no-brainer but there are still smartphones out there that ship without a microSD card slot. I’m looking at you, Apple. The Note 7 comes with just one option for internal storage — 64GB — which simplifies things for Samsung. Then, users can add up to 256GB of additional space with a memory card. Of note, the phone supports up to 2TB but the biggest microSD card out there right now is 256GB.

Secure Folder

The all new Secure Folder feature in Samsung’s TouchWiz software gives you a special folder that’s protected by an additional layer of security. You can store files, photos, videos or even apps in the folder. To access those files and apps, you’ll need to authenticate again with a password, fingerprint scan or an iris scan, which means you can unlock your phone and let someone else use it without worrying that he or she might access your private data.

Battery

3,500 mAh… fast wireless charging… even faster wired charging… two different power saving modes… the Galaxy Note 7 really is the total package when it comes to battery performance. It has enough juice to carry you through a full day of usage under almost any circumstances, and it refuels faster than most phones — even ones with smaller batteries.

Do you still think that Iphone 7 will be Better than this Beast Samsung just released??

Reason Why Next year’s new iPhone will be even more exciting than this year’s new iPhone

The iPhone 7 will be a very interesting device, no matter what you hear about it being boring. But if you want a completely redesigned iPhone, you’ll have to keep waiting until 2017, when Apple is expected to launch a new iPhone design, the first radical change since 2014. The handset will feature exciting new technology, previous reports said, and a new leak from Asia mentions the kind of new chips and screens that are in the making for the 2017 iPhone.

According to Digitimes’ sources , long-time iPhone chipmaker TSCM have entered the supply chain for Apple’s 2017 iPhone series, alongside other companies, including Chipbond Technology and MJC Probe.

The report notes that TSMC will provide A11 processors for the 2017 iPhones. No surprises there. But the report says the A11 chip will be built on 10nm process technology. That means the 2017 iPhone should be even faster and efficient than the iPhone 7.

A recent report from a trusted Apple insider revealed that Apple’s A10X chips, supposed to go inside next year’s iPads, will also be built on 10nm tech , with TSMC hired for the job.
TSMC will also provide its backend integrated fan-out (InFO) wafer-level packaging) for the A11.

The report also contains one important detail about next year’s iPhone: evidence that at least one device will feature an OLED display. It’s the same TSMC that will make OLED driver ICs for Apple, the sources said.
The OLED displays will be provided by Korea-based panel vendors, Digitimes says, which is code for Samsung and LG, two companies already rumored to looking to manufacture OLED screens for the iPhone of the future. But the OLED driver ICs will be developed in-house, the report notes.
Next year, Apple will celebrate the iPhone’s 10-year anniversary, which explains why the company may have decided not to go for a radical redesign this year. In fact, some reports even say that the iPhone 7 name will be reserved for the 2017 family, with this year’s series to be included in the iPhone 6 family.

Apple is going to unveil the 2016 iPhone on September 7th, with sales set to start on September 23rd , according to the most recent leaks.

iPhone 7: Our biggest question was just answered

Apple’s upcoming new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are the most talked about smartphones of 2016… and they don’t even exist yet. We’re less than one month away from seeing Apple unveil its next-generation iPhone lineup and if an earlier report from a reliable source ends up panning out, we’re almost exactly one month away from seeing the new iPhone models hit store shelves . Of note, a more recent report suggests that the iPhone 7 might be released a bit later than expected, but we’re not very confident that rumor is accurate.

Leaks and rumors from reliable sources have painted a near-complete picture of Apple’s upcoming new iPhones, but there are still a few questions that remain. Now, however, one of the biggest ones may have been answered.

At this point we know exactly what the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will look like. They’ll feature a familiar design in line with the current iPhone 6s and last year’s iPhone 6 lineup, but they’ll have new cameras and tweaked antenna lines. They will also reportedly feature a new home button design that utilizes Apple’s 3D Touch technology.

We can expect more power thanks to a new Apple A10 chipset, twice as much internal storage, better water-resistance and even a new color option — check out leaked photos of the iPhone 7 in both blue and black. But there’s one key area where no one really knew what to expect until now.

Apple is switching things up in 2016. Since the company has a completely overhauled iPhone planned for next year to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the original iPhone’s release, this year’s iPhone is going to be an “S” upgrade of sorts. Of course, last year’s new iPhone was an “S” upgrade as well. While everyone has been referring to the new 2016 iPhones as “iPhone 7” and “iPhone 7 Plus” to keep things simple, no one really knew what the phones would be named at launch.

Well, Mac Otakara has a good track record with reports covering unannounced Apple products, and on Wednesday morning the blog confirmed the names of Apple’s upcoming new iPhones. Are you ready? They’ll be called… the “iPhone 7” and “iPhone 7 Plus.”

It seems like a gimme since we’ve all been referring to them by those names for months now. Nothing was confirmed until now, however. Some reports suggested Apple’s new iPhones would somehow fall under the iPhone 6 name — “iPhone 6se” and “iPhone 6se Plus,” perhaps — while others suggested the larger iPhone model would be named “iPhone 7 Pro” to better align with Apple’s iPad lineup. According to this new report, however, neither will be the case.

Apple is expected to unveil its next-generation iPhones during a press conference on September 7th. Preorders will then reportedly kick off on September 9th ahead of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus release on September 16th.

The Selfie Beast with Flash : GionEE S6s to be lunched Soon

Selfie aficionados in India, get ready to change your definition of a “premium selfie.” Chinese tech giant Gionee has just posted a teaser image on its official Twitter account showing off its upcoming S6s smartphone, which it claims will redefine what a “premium selfie” means. The teaser comes just ahead of the official launch of the smartphone at an event to be held on August 22 in New Delhi, India for which the invites have already been sent out.

Gionee’s smartphones have been slowly gaining popularity in India, and the company has been slugging it out with its Chinese competitor OPPO in the selfie space. Gionee had earlier launched the S6 and S6 Pro under the S series, and joining the line up now is the S6s.

Not much is known about the S6s, though we can confirm that it will feature a front facing LED flash, as suggested by the invite for the launch event. Other than that, the S6s is expected to share the same design and specifications with the S6 Pro, which comes with a mid-range MediaTek Helio P10 chipset, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of expandable storage. The S6 Pro packs a 13 MP primary camera and an 8 MP front-facing camera, while a 3,130 mAh battery keeps the device running. If reports about the S6s being similar to the S6 Pro are true, then you can also expect the new smartphone to sport a full metal body and a fingerprint scanner.

Gionee’s latest teaser on Twitter shows an image of the upcoming smartphone in white and rose gold colors with the caption, “GioneeS6s Selfie with Flash,” and a message, “The incoming one…The New One, which is redefining “premium selfie” means to you.”
The GioneeS6s selfie-centric smartphone will be up against the OPPO F1s “selfie expert” smartphone, which was launched in India this month at a price of Rs 17,990 ($269). As of now, we don’t have any information about the pricing and availability of the GioneeS6s, but we’ll update you as soon the details are announced after its launch on August 22.

Huawei is selling a phone with the Galaxy S7’s specs for $400: See Specs

Huawei is a Chinese phone manufacturer notorious for selling off-contract Android phones for dirt cheap. With the latest addition to the family, the Honor 8, the tune is exactly the same — and that’s a seriously good thing.
The Honor 8 isn’t technically Huawei’s flagship phone, but you wouldn’t know it from a glance at the spec sheet. It’s a glass-backed phone that reminds me of the Nexus 4, with a 5.2-inch, full HD screen. Buried in the glass back is a dual-camera system, which yes, is the same thing rumored for the upcoming iPhone 7. Guess Huawei got there first.

The two rear cameras are both 12MP, but one takes a color picture, while the other shoots in black and white. Photos are captured with both sensors at once, and supposedly combined into a better image. It’s basically the same system on the existing Honor P9, but without the Leica branding.
Also on the back is Huawei’s fingerprint sensor, which doubles as a programmable smart button. More than anything else, I like the aesthetic — glass back with a silver ring is a rare distinctive look in a sea of black rectangles.

Underneath, it’s a Kirin 950 processor and 4GB of RAM running the show. In theory, that should be enough to make the phone buttery smooth, although this is the first phone sold with that chipset in the US. There’s also a 3,000mAh battery to power everything, which is decent but not exceptional for a 5-inch phone.
Otherwise, there’s a USB-C port for charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a microSD port for expansion. The 32GB model costs $400, with the 64GB running $450.

Overall, it looks like a solid offering for a price that’s a little under flagship phones. Most of all, it offers two things that people really care about — a unique design and a (hopefully) good camera — for well under the $600 that a flagship phone generally costs off-contract. At the $400 price point, it’s going up against the Oneplus 3, and more worryingly, the iPhone SE.
Huawei hasn’t made huge inroads into the US yet, and I don’t think the Honor 8 is enough of a knockout to change that on its own. It’s not a total game-changer, but a flagship phone for $400 really isn’t anything to sniff out. If Huawei can work out a way to really sell its phones without going through the cell carriers, it might be onto something.
Pre-orders open today on Amazon, Best Buy and Newegg, with a $50 gift card for anyone who pre-orders. Delivery is expected sometime in early September.

Earlier today, researchers from Kaspersky Lab reported that they recently stumbled across a new piece of sophisticated Android malware designed to steal a user’s banking credentials. In a broad sense, the malware is similar to other schemes we’ve seen before insofar that it uses cleverly thought out phishing schemes designed to trick users into entering in their banking user ID and password.

All the more worrisome is that the malware is able to intercept, delete and even send text messages sent from banking institutions. The danger with this is two-fold. One, some banks will send users an alert or notification when suspicious banking activity is detected. If the malware can delete such messages, users remain oblivious to the fact that their account may have been compromised.

Two, some banks have security protocols that require users to authenticate certain transactions or otherwise unusual banking activity via SMS. What’s more, the report notes that “the malware can counteract mobile security solutions that are popular in Russia by completing their processes.”
Now if that weren’t bad enough, Kaspersky adds that the malware is being spread by Google’s own AdSense advertising network.

This morning, we encountered a gratuitous act of violence against Android users. By simply viewing their favorite news sites over their morning coffee users can end up downloading last-browser-update.apk, a banking Trojan detected by Kaspersky Lab solutions as Trojan-Banker.AndroidOS.Svpeng.q. There you are, minding your own business, reading the news and BOOM! – no additional clicks or following links required. And be careful – it’s still out there!

It turns out the malicious program is downloaded via the Google AdSense advertising network. Be warned, lots of sites use this network – not just news sites – to display targeted advertising to users… The Trojan is downloaded as soon as a page with the advert is visited.

Notably, Kaspersky adds that the malware, for now, only appears to be targeting users in Russia. Google has yet to issue a comment on the matter and we’ll update this post if and when they do.

How to fix the Windows 10 Anniversary Update’s worst problem

In case you’re one of the unhappy Windows 10 users who has discovered that the system freezes after performing the Anniversary Update, we’ve got a partially good news for you: Microsoft issued a fix, but it’s only temporary.

The company doesn’t know what causes the freezing, ZDNet reports, so the fixes it’s suggesting should only help out as long as the company investigates the reasons causing it.

“Microsoft has received a small number of reports of Windows 10 freezing after installing the Anniversary Update on systems with the operating system stored on a solid-state drive (SSD) and apps and data stored on a separate drive. This issue does not occur when starting Windows 10 in Safe Mode,” Microsoft said on its support forum.

Fixing the problem is simple: rolling back to an older but stable Windows 10 version. You might not like it, but it’s the way to go.

Until a final fix is available, Microsoft has for affected users two ways of downgrading the operating system.
If they’ve installed the Anniversary Update less than 10 days ago, they’ll be able to sign into Windows 10 using Safe Mode and then move apps and data to the same drive as the operating system.
After that, they can revert back to the previous version of Windows running on the machine.
If they’ve updated more than 10 days ago, they’ll have to roll back to a previous build of Windows using the Recovery Console or the Settings app from Safe Mode.

A full look at Jeremy Clarkson’s top 10 all-star cars of 2016

Controversial media personality and automotive journalist Jeremy Clarkson may not be on Top Gear anymore, but he’s still giving us the goods on some of the world’s most impressive cars. In a recent column for the Sunday Times, Clarkson gets back down to basics and gives us his list of the top 10 cars of 2016 that warrant your undivided attention.
While lists that tend to rank items like the best cars tend to engender a whole lot of debate and disagreement, it’s hard to argue with Clarkson’s list here.

Especially in an era where car advancements tend to hit the market at a furious clip, it takes much more these days for a car to warrant and deserve the spotlight. As Clarkson tells it: “A car must have something to elevate it from the norm. It may be speed, or cleverness, or the fizz, or styling to die for. But there must be something. Something that makes you excited every time you climb inside. Because if it doesn’t, then it’s just a tool. And if it’s just a tool, you may as well use the bus.”

As a quick aside, Clarkson’s quip above serves to explain the passionate and somewhat curious following that Tesla attracts. The fit and finish one finds on a Tesla, for example, is hardly anything to write home about, but the fact that it’s electric and that it comes with some pretty nifty software features is enough to excite its users every time they step inside.

All that said, let’s jump right to the list and see what types of cars got Clarkson pumped up over the last few months. What makes this list particularly worth paying attention to is that it’s not simply a list of supercars that will set you back $300,000. Sure, Clarkson has his thing for the Lamborghinis and Ferraris of this world, but he also includes much more affordable cars from the likes of Ford and Volvo.

The full list reads as follows:

1. Mazda MX-5 2.0 Sport Recaro
2. Alfa Romeo 4C
3. Mercedes-AMG GT S
4. Ford Focus RS
5. Ford Mustang GT
6. Volvo XC90 D5 AWD
7. Vauxhall Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTi Tech Line
8. BMW M2
9. Ferrari 488 GTB
10. Lamborghini Aventador
